About Our Board
The volunteers of the Lake Superior Chapter of ATD are leaders who represent many roles within the training and human resources development profession here in the Northland. These leaders use their management, marketing and technical skills to plan, administer and implement the events, programs and projects of the Chapter. Through their guidance, the organization serves the educational and professional development needs of its members.

Your 2019 Board of Directors
Naomi has a BFA in Art & Design (emphasis in graphic design) from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and she uses that degree in a variety of ways. She has worked in website design and development, print design, illustration, information architecture and communication strategy for various companies and independent clients. Currently, she is pursuing a career as an artist working primarily in acrylic painting and focusing on natural pattern in her compositions. Naomi also enjoys using her design and communication skills to enrich her community through participating in community arts groups and a Toastmasters club. She is continually learning and enjoys being a part of an organization that is dedicated to learning, sharing relevant information and helping professionals continue their education.
She shares a big yellow house in Duluth, Minn. with her forester husband and cat.
Barb is a strategy coach and personalized development enthusiast, helping individuals and organizations find and implement strategies that align with their talents, values, and needs. Over 20 years of experience as an educator, in the classroom, professional development and coaching, provides her with many opportunities to see diverse, intense, often unrecognized, talents demonstrated by individuals of all ages. Barb’s mission to understand and support the great potential in others is guided by positive psychology and prompted her creation of Perception Coaching LLC.
Barb earned a PhD in Educational Psychology as well a certificate for Talent Development and Gifted Education from the University of Minnesota. She is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach (StrengthsFinder), EQ-i 2.0 and 360 Certified Coach (Emotional Intelligence), as well as a Board Certified Executive and Life Coach (BCC). Her biggest takeaway: Communication, productivity, engagement, and happiness are all positively impacted by developing a strengths-based culture.
Shannon Studden is a Program Specialist with the National Rural Health Resource Center in Duluth, where she provides consulting to health care leaders across the country. In prior roles, Shannon has designed and delivered leadership and organizational development programs as part of the Continuing Education department at the University of Minnesota Duluth, managed the Talent Management and Leadership Development functions at Cleveland-Cliffs.
Shannon specializes in the areas of talent management, leadership and organizational development, group facilitation, and conflict management. She holds her M.S. Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
In her free time, Shannon enjoys camping, kayaking, hiking, yoga, and slow short-distance running.
Tiffany has a Master’s degree in Social Work and in Management and has found the two fields complement each other when it comes to employee and leadership development. She currently works at The College of St. Scholastica with the TRIO/Student Support Services program offering support and guidance to first-generation, low-income, and students with a disability. Tiffany has a great passion for talent development and leadership development and finds ATD a valuable resource in helping her bridge her social work experience with her management degree. Outside of work, Tiffany enjoys spending time with family and friends and loves to bike, hike, sail, and snowshoe.
Juli has a degree in Management with an HR concentration from The College of St. Scholastica. She has been working in Staff Development since 2003 for St. Louis County. She develops training in various topics and formats to meet the training needs for County staff.
Kim has a BS degree in Communicating Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and she is pursing a MBA in Leadership and Change from the College of St. Scholastica, which will be complete in the summer of 2018. She currently works as a hospice volunteer supervisor, focusing her efforts on recruitment, training, and retention of a robust volunteer force to support the good work that hospice does for patients and their families. She has a long history in providing and supporting learning and staff development opportunities and firmly believes that everyone, regardless of position title, has the choice to shine and to lead. She is passionate about lifelong learning both for herself and in fostering opportunities for others to grow. When she isn't working or studying, she enjoys spending time with her husband and kids, watching classic films, cooking, and reading.
Jessica Bortolus is finishing her MBA in Leadership and Change in 2018. She graduated with her BA in Global, Cultural and Language Studies with minors in German and Economics from the College of St. Scholastica in 2015. The integration of her degrees supports student development at Lake Superior College as a TRIO Student Support Services Advisor.
In previous roles, Jessica integrated technology in workshops, implemented program assessment, streamlined office processes through Google Apps, and evolved program branding. Jessica is passionate about diversity and inclusion, change management, organization development, leadership development, employee engagement and organizational culture.
Stacy Johnston is an experienced trainer and solutions specialist, with a diverse Human Resource and legal background. Stacy is a licensed attorney and has earned the SHRM-CP and PHR credentials.
Stacy is the founder of HR Learning Lab and Audacity HR Solutions and an instructor at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Stacy is the Co-VP of Marketing on our Board, and is a member of ATD (Association for Talent Development), NHRA (Northland HR Association), SHRM (Society for HR Management) and NSA (National Speakers Association).
Dawn has a passion for creating success in organizations. For more than 18 years Dawn has been developing people, small businesses, and organizations in a variety of industries including health care, higher education, direct sales, and energy.
In her current position as a Senior Analyst in ALLETE’s Learning and Organization Development area she works to develop all levels of leadership from front line supervisors to emerging executives. She holds a B.A. in Psychology along with an MBA and a Master of Arts in Management (MAM) all from The College of St. Scholastica. Alongside leadership development her professional interests and experience include: employee onboarding, employee engagement, organizational culture, effective teams, employee/employer loyalty, and trust.In her spare time Dawn likes to read, write, scrapbook, and occasionally engage in a good Netflix binge.
Kathy Pykkonen is currently the Corporate Learning and Development Manager for Cirrus Aircraft. In her current role she is responsible for building a leadership development pipeline across the company and an environment that encourages cooperation and collaboration in achieving company goals.
Prior to joining Cirrus, Kathy was the Director of Career Services at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and owner of Progressive Image Pro speaking on business and dining etiquette throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Kathy served in the active duty Air Force for 8 years where she completed her undergraduate work at Western International University in Behavioral Science and she has a Master of Science in Education from UW-Superior.
Kathy is involved with the Northland Human Resource Association and the Association of Training and Development, numerous civic groups and her children’s school.
Cam Loberg is the Process and Experience Trainer at Members Cooperative Credit Union. Cam has been working in the financial services industry for the past 14 years. As the Process and Experience Trainer, Cam provides support while continually improving current processes and creating new pathways that will improve the overall experience of credit union members and team members.
Lisa is an experienced learning and development practitioner with a proven history designing and developing highly engaging and effective instructor-led and e-Learning training solutions for a variety of industries and subject matter. She uses strong knowledge of instructional design principles (i.e. ADDIE) and adult learning theory to guide projects to successful completion. Lisa excels at building relationships and establishing partnerships with business stakeholders at all organizational levels.
In her current positon as a Learning and Development Specialist at Be The Match, Lisa consults with leaders across departments to assess, design, develop, plan and deliver learning programs to maximize the talent of employees and volunteers. Her professional passions include: leadership/employee development, mentoring, instructional design, program development/management, internal consulting, and project management. Lisa holds a B.A. in Music from Augsburg University along with a Master of Public and Nonprofit Administration (MPNA) from Metro State University.
In her leisure time, Lisa’s interests include: music, opera, theater, hiking, cross country skiing, travel, volunteering, and binge watching good shows (especially during winter!).
