Morning Session: Courageous Conversations

This century's workplace makes conflict resolution more important but also more difficult. Team or work cell environments create more conflict as people with different opinions work together, often in close quarters. Managers, supervisors, business owners, human resource directors and employees will gain essential skills in mastering courageous conversations. The goal is not to eliminate conflict, but to learn how to manage conflict constructively and productively. In this session you will gain essential skills in mastering courageous conversations. You will gain skills to manage conflict constructively in the workplace environment and you will learn to articulate specific desired changes and detail the benefits of making the change.
Rob Karwath, instructor with the University of MN/Duluth Continuing Education Program, is President and CEO of North Coast Communications in Duluth, a company he founded after 25 years as an executive, top editor, and award-winning reporter at some of the countries’ largest and most innovative media companies. Rob holds a BS with honors in Journalism from the University of Kansas and an MBA with honors from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
Afternoon Session: Determine Your Day—Managing Workflow in the Chaos
Presented by Mickey Fitch
Have you ever left work at the end of the day wondering where exactly all the time went? Or not be able to put your finger on what you actually achieved? Or arrived at work and instantly felt overwhelmed by competing tasks and priorities? In this session, participants will learn tips and tricks for prioritization, time and mobility management, and determining work flow. Participants will leave the session with several templates and examples of methods to achieve the optimum flow amidst chaos in the workplace.
Mickey Fitch is the Director of Residential Life at The College of St. Scholastica here in Duluth, MN. Prior to working at CSS, Mickey served in various student affairs/higher education administration positions at University of Wisconsin-Superior, University of Maine at Machias, and Iowa State University. Mickey is the founder of StudentAffairsSleuth.com, a service for higher education professionals needing assistance in professional development planning and job searching. In addition, Mickey is currently pursuing her PhD in Higher Education Leadership at Northcentral University. Mickey received her Master’s in Counseling and Student Personnel from Minnesota State University, Mankato and her Bachelors in Psychology from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
